The world’s first levitating turntable is unveiled

Vinyl aficionados will be able to spin their favourite records on a cushion of air thanks to a revolutionary new turntable.

The gravity-defying record player dubbed Mag-Lev Audio (Magnetic-Levitation Audio) electromagnetically floats the platter over the turntable base when the user flicks the on switch ‘bringing the feeling of zero gravity to your living room.’

When the turntable is in rest mode, the platter rests on special moving feet while the tonearm returns to its original position.

To prevent damage to the vinyl, in the event of a power outage the turntable contains a custom build UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) that gives the user enough time to lift the tonearm, stop the record and extend the platter feet.

As well as its aesthetic appeal Mag-Lev Audio apparently circumnavigates that pesky problem of vinyl jumping due to vibrations.

“By using innovative, patented technology, we were able to achieve magnetic levitation while maintaining the incredibly precise turning of the platter,” Mag-Lev Audio’s makers enthused in a press release.

“Air is the smoothest medium possible with the least amount of friction, meaning this project has elevated listening to music into a truly magical listening experience.”

Mag-Lev Audio have started a kickstarter campaign looking for funding to mass produce the futuristic turntable.

Those who pledge can buy the turntable for prices starting from $780 (£640) compared to the basic retail price of $1390 (£1140).
