The Rolling Stones waive royalties on Jo Cox Christmas single
The Rolling Stones have waived their royalties from a cover of ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ released in tribute to murdered Labour MP Jo Cox.
A number of musicians including Cockney Rebel’s Steve Harley and Kaiser Chiefs singer Ricky Wilson have teamed up with Members of Parliament and the Royal Opera House Thurrock Community Chorus to record a version of the 1969 Stones classic.
Released today (Friday 16th December), the cover is one the firm favourites to secure the Christmas number one spot next week.
The single is being released to raise money for the Jo Cox Foundation, which has been ‘established to advance the values and causes that Jo fought for in her life.’
In Parliament yesterday, the Scottish National party’s leader in the House of Commons, Pete Wishart, confirmed that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have waived their royalties from any sales.
“I’m sure the leader of the house would also like to join me in thanking Sir Mick Jagger and Keith Richards for waiving their royalties to their piece of You Can’t Always Get What You Want, ensuring that even more money goes to the Jo Cox Foundation,” he said.
Bookmakers William Hill have also said that they will donate the money staked on ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ getting to Christmas number one to charity.
Earlier this week, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, confirmed that all VAT on the sales of the Christmas single will go to the Jo Cox Foundation.
The West Yorkshire MP was murdered in her Birstall constituency on 16th June. Thomas Mair is serving a life sentence for the killing.
