The Rolling Stones cover The Beatles at Desert Trip
The Rolling Stones covered their fellow music legends The Beatles during their headline slot at the opening night of Desert Trip in California on Friday (7th October).
Held at the site of Coachella Festival at Empire Polo Field in Indio, The Stones shared the bill on the opening night of the three-day event with Bob Dylan.
After storming through anthems like ‘Start Me Up’, ‘Wild Horses’ and ‘It’s Only Rock n’ Roll (But I Like It)’, eight songs into the set the ever-energetic Mick Jagger told the capacity crowd: "We're gonna do a cover song of a sort of unknown beat group.
“I think you might remember them, we're gonna try a cover of one of their tunes."
The Stones then launched into a cover of The Beatles’ Abbey Road opener ‘Come Together’. You can watch footage right here:
Later on, 73-year-old Mick poked fun at the festival’s nickname of ‘Oldchella’: "Tonight we're not going to do any age jokes or anything, OK? Welcome to the Palm Springs retirement home for gentle English musicians".
The set also featured the band’s first live performance of Jimmy Reed’s ‘Ride ‘Em on Down’ since 1962. The track appears on The Stones’ covers album ‘Blue and Lonesome’, which is released on 2nd December.
Roger Waters, The Who, Neil Young and Paul McCartney also performed at Desert Trip over the weekend.
