Two music venues - The Tivoli in Buckley and Nightrain in Bradford - have cancelled upcoming concerts from The Quireboys following singer Spike’s shock exit from the band.
The Quireboys were due to play Nightrain on Friday 27th May and The Tivoli on Saturday 10th September as part of their A Bit of What You Fancy 30th anniversary tour, however both venues have axed the gigs.
The Tivoli wrote on Facebook on Thursday (31st March) that their show has now been axed as 90% of ticketholders have requested a refund. Nightrain also blamed a "high volume" of refunds.
On Tuesday (29th March), The Quireboys surprised fans when they announced they were continuing as a five-piece band without Spike on vocals.
A few hours later, Spike claimed he’d been ousted from the band, writing: “I have received a letter from 3 of MY band members informing me that my services are no longer required to sing or perform with them.”
Yesterday, The Tivoli said they had “no option” but to cancel The Quireboys’ upcoming show.
Under the title ‘CANCELLED SHOW’, they wrote: “This is with huge regret as We love The Quireboys, they are most definitely a Tivoli favourite.
“I'm sure most of you already know the band recently sacked Spike (Original member & Lead singer). For me and I know for a lot of you Spike is The Quireboys, without Spike in the band there is no Quireboys.
“Since Tuesday's announcement from the band 90% of sales have asked for a refund, on that note I have no option to Cancel their gig at The Tivoli, Saturday 10th September 2022.
“Please contact point of purchase for a refund.”
Following suit, Nightrain wrote today: "Unfortunately due to the news earlier this week regarding ‘The Quireboys’ and having to refund a high volume of customers, we have been left with no choice but to cancel the show.
"We apologise to all those who bought tickets, a refund will be sent to the remaining few customers."
Guitarist Guy Griffin is now the longest serving member of The Quireboys having joined the band in 1989, and alongside Spike he’s the only Quireboy to have appeared on all of their studio albums.
The Quireboys performed two sets on the Monsters of Rock Cruise from Miami to the Caribbean and back in February with Griffin on vocal duties.
