The Cult’s Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy are ‘stepping away’ from touring for an ‘an undetermined amount of time’.
The legendary gothic rockers issued a statement on Wednesday (22nd October) confirming they will take a hiatus to ‘recharge our spiritual batteries’ once they’ve completed their current North American tour this month.
Fortunately, The Cult will remain active in the recording studio as they focus on creating new music.
‘Mother Nature has a cycle of change and evolution that is inevitable. The moon’s phases change, tides rise and fall. Change is necessary for creation and rebirth,’ The Cult’s statement reads.
‘It is with this in mind that, following the remaining dates on our current North American The Cult/Death Cult 8525 Tour, we have decided to step away from touring for an undetermined amount of time. We have toured extensively over the last few years and we shall now shift our focus to writing, recording new music, and exploring other projects that shall be revealed over time. It is a time for us to turn inward to recharge our spiritual batteries.
‘When we return to the stage, it shall be with an even stronger fire and energy that we will share with all of you.
‘Ours is a communal bond, and it will not be broken, simply paused.
‘Until then, we have five remaining shows on this current tour, culminating at The Shrine in Los Angeles on Oct 30. Please join us for what has been an incredible celebration of 40 years of The Cult and Death Cult.
‘Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the love and support. It keeps us alive.’
Guitarist Billy Duffy comments: “It’s been a beautiful three years celebrating our music with The Cult family around the world. Now it’s time to go home and spend time with our own families, and create some new music.”
Singer Ian Astbury adds: “My deepest gratitude to all who attended and immersed themselves in our world. I am deeply grateful to be connected to our Cult family as we ready ourselves for our final five shows for some time, and we take the opportunity to dive deeper into our next creative adventures. More shall be revealed. Blessings to you all.”
Celebrities with Motörhead tattoos:
Robbie Williams' Motörhead tattoo
Stoke-on-Trent's third most famous musical export (behind Lemmy and Slash), Robbie Williams, has an Ace of Spades tattoo on his right hand in homage to Motörhead.

Dave Grohl's Motörhead tattoo
Two days after Lemmy's death in December 2015, Foo Fighters frontman paid tribute to his close friend by getting an Ace of Spades tattoo on his left forearm. Pictured is Lemmy and Dave at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards in 2010.

James Hetfield's Motörhead tattoo
Metallica frontman James Hetfield upped the ante in the Motörhead tribute stakes by getting the late-great Lemmy's ashes tattooed onto his body. A post on Metallica's Instagram showed the moustachioed metaller pulling a face giving the finger to the camera, whilst holding a bullet engraved with Lemmy's name and containing his ashes. Hetfield's middle digit now features an iron cross design containing within it an ace of spades in homage to Motörhead's biggest hit. The ink for the tattoo was mixed with some of Lemmy's mortal remains.
Motörhead's Röadcrew get Lemmy tattoos
Almost three years before James Hetfield's tribute, long-time production managers Eddie and Emma from Motorhead's touring crew – the infamous Röadcrew – both got Lemmy tattoos mixed with his ashes. Eddie's tattoo is of Lemmy's face, while Emma went for an Ace of Spades design. Lemmy famously instructed that his ashes be distributed to his closest friends in engraved bullets, with the likes of Duff McKagan, Michael Monroe, Doro, Rob Halford and Whitfield Crane having publicly stated that they've received the incredibly on-brand Lemmy gifts.
Norman Reedus and Brent Hinds' Motörhead tattoos
The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus and former Mastodon guitarist both got tattoos in tribute to Lemmy in March 2016, three months after the Motörhead's death. Hinds posted an image of himself at the Abracadabra Tattoo shop in New Orleans with Reedus and the two tattoo artists alongside the caption: "Making tattoos of Lemmy".

With just five minutes to get their tattoos, Norman Reedus got a simple ink of Lemmy's name in lowercase letters (pictured). Hinds opted for the Ace of Spades symbol with Lemmy's initial in the centre.
