Stone Temple Pilots reveal the secret of their longevity
Stone Temple Pilots siblings Robert and Dean have cited a mutual brotherly love and respect as the reasons behind the band’s longevity.
Formed in the late eighties as The Mighty Joe Young before changing their name to Stone Temple Pilots, guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Ketz have remained constant members for 30 years.
The late-great Scott Weiland exited the group in acrimonious circumstances in 2013 with late Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington taking over vocal duties for two years, before they recruited Jeff Gutt in 2017.
As they prepare to release an expansive 25th anniversary edition of their seminal second studio album ‘Purple’ on 13th September, Planet Rock’s Loz Guest asked Robert and Dean at Download Festival about how they’ve managed to stick around so long.
Dean replied: “We still love one another, we still tolerate one another respectfully.”
Explaining that there’s no rivalry between them unlike some sibling bands, Robert added: “We don’t have to (get on).
“There’s a lot of history between brothers and rock and roll – we don’t really fit the mould. It’s been really, really amicable and great to be writing music together.”
