Stevie Nicks on Lindsey Buckingham: 'I dealt with him for as long as I could'
She has spoken about his exit

Stevie Nicks has reflected on her tumultuous time with Lindsey Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac, saying “I dealt with Lindsey for as long as I could.”
Back in April 2018, fans were shocked when Fleetwood Mac announced the departure of Lindsey Buckingham and unveiled his two replacements, Crowded House’s Neil Finn and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell.
Six months later, Buckingham claimed Nicks got him fired from Fleetwood Mac and he slapped his former band mates with a lawsuit claiming he lost out on at least $12million from their sprawling 60-date North American tour. The legal proceedings were eventually settled out of court.
Nicks strongly refuted Buckingham’s version of events, saying in a strongly worded 2021 statement: “To be exceedingly clear, I did not have (Buckingham) fired, I did not ask for him to be fired, I did not demand he be fired. Frankly, I fired myself. I proactively removed myself from the band and a situation I considered to be toxic to my wellbeing. I was done. If the band went on without me, so be it.
“And after many lengthy group discussions, Fleetwood Mac, a band whose legacy is rooted in evolution and change, found a new path forward with two hugely talented new members.”
In an expansive new interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Stevie Nicks revealed that she briefly spoke to her former band mate and ex-boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham at Christine McVie’s memorial service in Florida in January 2023.
“Christine threw down a hurricane on top of Nobu, which is where we had it,” Nicks said. “Almost blew the whole place away, honest to God. Tore down the entire deck that was all decorated and everything. So it was kind of crazy. We all felt like she was there, because it was really intense.
“The only time I’ve spoken to Lindsey was there, for about three minutes. I dealt with Lindsey for as long as I could. You could not say that I did not give him more than 300 million chances.”
Asked if she wishes she cut ties with Buckingham before 2018, Nicks replied: “No, I think that all just happened the way it should have. It happened one night, not planned, at a MusiCares (benefit concert in January 2018).
“I didn’t even tell anybody it had happened in my head until the whole ceremony was over …That’s when he wasn’t very nice to anybody; he wasn’t very nice to Harry Styles.
“I could hear my mom saying, ‘Are you really going to spend the next 15 years of your life with this man?’ I could hear my very pragmatic father — and by the way, my mom and dad liked Lindsey a lot — saying, ‘It’s time for you guys to get a divorce.’ Between those two, I said, ‘I’m done.'”
She added: “I wish him the best. I hope he lives a long life and continues to go into a studio and work with other people. He’s also an icon, and he can teach people. He’s not stopped in his tracks. He can still make music and have fun.”
Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood have both said that it’s unlikely Fleetwood Mac will ever get back together in the wake of Christine McVie’s death in November 2022.
