His first concept record in almost five decades

Genesis legend Steve Hackett has announce details of his first conceptual studio album in almost five decades, ‘The Circus and the Nightwhale.’

Released on Friday 16th February 2024 via InsideOut Music, ‘The Circus and the Nightwhale’ is billed as a ‘rite-of-passage concept album with a young character called Travla at the centre of it.’

The album’s 13 tracks have an autobiographical angle for the esteemed musician, who says about his 30th solo release: “I love this album. It says the things I’ve been wanting to say for a very long time.”

‘The Circus and the Nightwhale’ is Hackett’s first album since 2021’s ‘Surrender of Silence’, and his first concept record since ‘Voyage Of The Acolyte’ way back in 1975.

Hackett explains further: “The Circus And The Nightwhale is an album with a difference. This time it is a story, based both literally and metaphorically on my life… It’s both faction and fiction, beginning in a gritty world of harsh reality, spinning off into a colourful and dark, weird metaphorical universe of wonder turned to terror, with an ultimately beautiful resolve.

“It spans the musical range from the heaviest to the heavenly, with musical influences, instruments and artists from several countries around the world. I’m hugely proud of this new album which I see as intensely personal, yet totally universal at the same time… If ever there was a film for the ear, this is it!”

Steve Hackett - The Circus and the Nightwhale

Summing up the record in one succinct sentence, Hackett says: “It’s a lovely journey that starts dirty, scratchy and smoky and becomes heavenly and divine. How can you resist it?”

Recorded between tours in 2022 and 2023 at Siren studio in the UK – with guest parts beamed in from Sweden, Austria, the US, Azerbaijan and Denmark – Hackett drafted in many familiar names to work on the album.

With Hackett on electric and acoustic guitars, 12-string, mandolin, harmonica, percussion, bass and vocals, the personal included Roger King (keyboards, programming and orchestral arrangements), Rob Townsend (sax), Jonas Reingold (bass), Nad Sylvan (vocals), Craig Blundell (drums) and Amanda Lehmann on vocals.

Nick D’Virgilio and Hugo Degenhardt return as guests on the drumstool, engineer extraordinaire Benedict Fenner appears on keyboards and Malik Mansurov is back with the tar. Finally, Steve’s brother John Hackett is present once more on flute.

‘The Circus and the Nightwhale’ will be available to pre-order from the 1st December 2023 on several different formats, including a Limited CD+Blu-ray mediabook (including 5.1 Surround Sound & 24bit high resolution stereo mixes), Standard CD Jewelcase, Gatefold 180g Vinyl LP & as Digital Album. All feature the striking cover painting by Denise Marsh.
