Steve Hackett reveals why a Genesis reunion hasn't happened
Steve Hackett has blamed “Mexican standoffs” within Genesis for getting in the way of a reunion.
Speaking to Planet Rock, Steve said that although communication between the band was great in their embryonic years, things are more complicated nowadays.
He explained: “The problem is that – and no one really wants to hear this – but the reality is that what starts as communication between young guys in their early twenties ends up becoming phase cancellation later on; Mexican standoffs and all of that.
“And it really does get in the way and that’s the reason why there is no band at the moment - and that may all change tomorrow, of course!”
Earlier this week, Phil Collins said he was open to the idea of a Genesis reunion with his 17-year-old son Nic on drums.
Asked about the possibility of a reunion by Rolling Stone Magazine, Phil said: “I wouldn’t say there isn’t not a possibility. Me, Mike (Rutherford) and Tony (Banks) are pretty close still. I can’t imagine what it would be like if I didn’t play the drums, but anything is possible.”
Reflecting on Mike and Tony watching Nic performing in London, Phil added: “They both were raving about Nic.
“Mike made the appropriate comment of, ‘He just gets it. He just gets what is needed and what is required and why you’re doing this for that song.’ I thought that was a wonderful thing to say. He was 16 at that point.
“I think that, yeah, if we did anything I think it would have to be with Nic on drums because I don’t think I’m capable of it. I think their opinion of Nic is high enough for them to take him onboard as part of the band.”
Both Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford have also refused to rule out a Genesis reunion in interviews over the past year.

Steve comments: "I always hoped that the Genesis music would one day involve an orchestra and I'm proud to say I'll now be able to make that dream a reality on my next British tour, involving my own extraordinary rock band alongside a full-sized orchestra."
The show will feature some of Genesis’s best-loved tracks including ‘Supper’s Ready’, ‘Dancing with the Moonlit Knight’ and ‘Firth of Fifth’ while Steve’s solo repertoire will be represented by the likes of ‘Shadow of the Hierophant’, ‘El Niño’ and ‘The Steppes’.
