Grunge icons aim to release new album this year

The band made the announcement via their official website, saying:

"Over the past few months, we’ve been busy jamming, writing and hanging out together – exploring the creative aspect of being Soundgarden. It feels great. We have some cool new songs that we are going to record very soon. Our goal for 2011 – Let’s make a record".

It was unclear what the future held for Soundgarden as they reformed early in 2010, released a new best of and played just a handful of live shows.

They release a new live album Live On I-5 on 21 March. The album was recorded in 1996 in venues up and down the West Coast of America (the "I-5" in the album title refers to Interstate 5). The album features covers of the Beatles' 'Helter Skelter' and The Stooges' 'Search & Destroy.'
