Slash on Guns N' Roses: 'In our heart of hearts we want to do a new record'
Slash says that Guns N’ Roses are keen to make a new album, but their hectic schedule hasn’t allowed it yet.
During his wide-ranging interview in Issue 10 of Planet Rock magazine, we asked Slash - real name Saul Hudson - whether he plans to record his first album with Gun N’ Roses since "The Spaghetti Incident?" quarter of a century ago.
Slash replied: “I couldn’t tell you right now whether there’s gonna be a record or not. I think in everybody’s heart of hearts we want to do a record, but we’ve been working so hard on the road that we haven’t really had the chance to sit down and focus on new material or anything like that.”
Describing the chemistry within the Guns N’ Roses camp as “amazingly harmonious”, Slash says that they didn’t expect their reunion to last so long.
“We have another leg of the tour to do in November. So, yeah!,” Slash said. “One thing I can tell you is that when we started this, we didn’t have any aspirations to go beyond two shows for Coachella, plus the warm-up shows at the Troubadour (in Los Angeles) and in Vegas (the T-Mobile Arena).
“I didn’t know, really, what was going to happen; it was very Guns N’ Roses-esque in that manner. And then we went and did it and it was just a f***ing blast. But Axl breaking his leg on the first show was just so us!”
Agreeing that the Guns N’ Roses reunion is romantic on the inside as it appears on the outside, Slash continued: “When Axl (Rose) and Duff (McKagan) and I got into a room – the other guys, too, but that particular relationship – the chemistry was ignited.
“I’d forgotten about the really intense chemistry that exists between us. With us, s just happens naturally and you don’t even have to think about it. It’s like a self-driving car or something, and you feel your body falling into this thing. And when we went out in front of an audience it was really, really fing powerful.
“On top of that, everybody’s getting along great, so it’s a renaissance of the band because it’s just been so f***ing crazy.”
Asked about Axl Rose no longer turning up late on stage and becoming a performer you can set your watch to, Slash responded: “That’s an area that you have a perspective on, and I don’t even go there.
“But I know Axl from working with him, and I will say that working with him on this tour has been unlike any other time I’ve worked with him. But he’s the same guy. It’s a really interesting thing.”
