Taylor Hawkins' son Shane wins prestigious drumming award for his performance of 'My Hero'
It has been hailed as the Drum Performance of the Year
Taylor Hawkins’ teenage son, Shane Hawkins, has won a coveted drumming award for his performance of Foo Fighters ‘My Hero’ at the London tribute concert for his late dad in September.
Foo Fighters’ headline set at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert at London’s Wembley Stadium on Saturday 3rd September saw a number of drummers perform with the band including Josh Freese, blink-182’s Travis Barker, drumming prodigy Nandi Bushell, The Darkness’ Rufus Taylor, and Omar Hakim.
However, it was Taylor Hawkins’ 16-year-old son, Shane, who arguably stole the epic show with his emotional and powerful rendition of Foo Fighters’ 1997 anthem ‘My Hero.’
Shane also joined Foo Fighters on stage at their second Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert in Los Angeles where he played drums on ‘My Hero’ and ‘I’ll Stick Around.’
This week, the Drumeo Awards announced their 2022 winners and Shane Hawkins’ ‘My Hero’ performance in London was named as the Drum Performance Of The Year.
Explaining why Shane scooped the prestigious honour, Drumeo wrote: ‘The winner of this award put on a legendary, must-watch performance during 2022, either with a full band at an event or in a solo studio video.
‘16-year-old Shane Hawkins did just that, pouring his heart and soul into a live performance of ‘My Hero’ at a tribute concert dedicated to his late father and Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins.
‘It touched millions of people and showed how much love, energy, and spirit can come out on the drum kit.’
The Police's Stewart Copeland said in September that he ‘started crying’ when he first witnessed Shane Hawkins drumming with Foo Fighters during rehearsals for the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert.
"The most emotional moment for me was at sound check a couple of days ago here and to see young Shane Hawkins on the drums," Copeland said.
"I started crying. He’s got it. He’s got such power, enthusiasm. He’s got his father’s stance, musical language. That was really emotional to see young Shane up there.”
Other winners at the Drumeo Awards included Slipknot’s Jay Weinberg (Drum Recording of the Year for ‘The End, So Far’), Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith (Drummer of the Year), Tool’s Danny Carey (Progressive Drummer of the Year) and blink-182’s Travis Barker (Rock Drummer of the Year).
Foo Fighters make their live return this summer at a string of North American festival shows and their only European dates of 2023 at Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park.
