Scott Weiland countersues
Singer seeks compensation of over £5 million.
Rolling Stone has reported that Weiland filed the countersuit last Friday, in response to STP’s initial lawsuit, which accused their former lead singer of misusing the band's name to further his solo work.
"How do you expel a man from a band that he started, named, sang lead on every song, wrote the lyrics and was the face of for 20 years, and then try to grab the name and goodwill for yourselves? You don't, but three of the instrumentalists from the band 'Stone Temple Pilots' (the 'Band') tried" stated Weiland's complaint.
Weiland is seeking compensatory damages "in excess" of $5 million, along with statutory damages of up to $2 million. Stone Temple Pilot's performance last month, with Linkin Park's Chjester Bennington on vocals, would represent one count of Weiland's sought-after statutory damages.
Weiland has highlighted an agreement, signed by the band in 1996 and amended in 2010, which states that that the band would have to play under a different name if they separated from him.
Weiland is currently on a short tour, playing with his solo band The Wildabouts.
