Rich Robinson explains why The Magpie Salute are inspired by Led Zeppelin & The Rolling Stones
The Magpie Salute’s Rich Robinson says the band’s eclecticism is inspired by classic artists including Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan.
Moments after stepping off stage from their headline slot at Planet Rockstock, guitarist and band founder Rich Robinson and vocalist John Hogg spoke to Paul Anthony backstage.
Asked about the success of their debut album ‘High Water I’, which was met with critical acclaim, Rich says he it’s down to their wide-ranging musical palate.
“The cool thing about this band that people have talked to me about – journalists and fans and stuff – is how diverse it is,” Rich said.
“People have said ‘wow you don’t really hear that that much anymore’. But all the records I listened to when I was a kid, I mean (Led) Zeppelin would play ballads and they would do stomps and these acoustic records and more symphonic things, and The (Rolling) Stones would do all sorts of things.
“You go down the line (and) all the bands we grew up listening to… you look at Dylan, you look at where he came from and where he went when he went electric, what he did. All of our favourite bands did that and so I’ve always written that way, y’know, in the (Black) Crowes or on my own or in this band (The Magpie Salute).
“That’s what makes it really cool is to see this group of musicians be able to go from a ballad to go to something heavy to go to something more acoustic and organic and have all of these different influences but have this whole band go there with such ease.”
Elsewhere in the chat, Rich and John confirmed that their second album ‘High Water II’ will see the light of day in the summer and opened up about the difference between performing as a solo artist and in a band.
