Punk Pioneer Malcolm McLaren Dies
Former Pistols manager dies aged 64
Former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren has died of cancer aged 64.
The punk pioneer famously steered the Sex Pistols to notoriety and legend from 1975-1977 as well as playing a crucial part in shaping a cultural revolution in the late 70s.
As well as looking after the Sex Pistols McLaren also briefly managed the New York Dolls and ran clothing stores Let It Rock with designer and then-partner Vivienne Westwood (with whom he had a son, Joseph, born in 1967) which was later re-named Too Fast To Live Too Young To Die, and then, most famously, SEX.
He also had a minor musical career of his own, bagging a handful of hit records of his own in 'Buffalo Gals', 'Double Dutch' and 'Madame Butterfly'.
"For me Malc was always entertaining and I hope you remember that," John Lydon said in a statement. "Above all else he was an entertainer and I will miss him, and so should you."
"When we were young and I fell in love with Malcolm McLaren," Vivienne Westwood said in a statement. "I thought he was beautiful and I still do. I thought he is a very charismatic, special and talented person. The thought of him dead is really something very sad."
McLaren died in Switzerland after a long battle with cancer and his body will be flown home to be buried at Highgate cemetery.
RIP Malcolm McLaren, 1946 – 2010.
