Throughout October 2020 on Planet Rock we’re marking Black History Month by highlighting the achievements and contributions of black artists who have shaped our beloved rock music genre.
Every day in October across the station, you’ll be hearing seminal songs from an array of musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, Thin Lizzy and Living Colour to name but a few.
Blues Power presenter Bernard Doherty will also be telling the stories behind songs by black musicians that have influenced countless others including Led Zeppelin, Cream and The Doors.
Planet Rock Plays It In Full
Planet Rock Plays It In Full will also feature timeless albums from black artists, kicking off with Phil Lynott’s debut solo album ‘Solo In Soho’ at 11pm on Monday 5th October followed by Gary Clark Jr.'s 'Blak & Blu' on Monday 12th October at 11.50pm.
On Monday 19th October at 11pm, we’ll be playing Living Colour’s 1988 debut album ‘Vivid’ in its glorious entirety, and finish the month in style on Monday 26th October with The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s 1968 opus ‘Electric Ladyland’ in full.
Blues Power
Blues Power with Bernard Doherty is celebrating Black History Month with a series of special shows dedicated to legendary artists.
Bernard kicked off on Saturday 3rd October with a show devoted to the one and only Muddy Waters… his music from the Delta and the birth of electric blues in Chicago plus some of the many ground-breaking artists he influenced.
On Saturday 10th October at 10pm, Blues Power centres on the theme ‘’DISCOVER THAT ORIGINAL’’ .. Bernard will delve into his vaults to find the roots of classic tracks that have gone on to become rock anthems.
Then on Saturday 17th October at 10pm Bernard will be hosting a Blue Power special on Jimi Hendrix, before focusing on an artists including Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley to Hendrix and on to Gary Clark Jr on Saturday 24th October at 10pm.
Concluding the month, on Saturday 31st October, Bernard will shine the spotlight on the three kings - BB . Freddy & Albert.
My Planet Rocks
Together with the enhanced music content, Planet Rock is airing conversations with Skunk Anansie’s Skin, Gary Clark Jr and Living Colour on My Planet Rocks.
Skin opened the My Planet Rocks Black History Month shows on Sunday night (4th October) at 8pm, with Gary Clark Jr following at 8pm on Sunday 18th October, and Living Colour at 7pm on Sunday 25th October.
