Pink Floyd's Dark Side Tops Album Cover Poll

1973 wins yet another cover art poll

Published 16th May 2011

The Hignosis designed sleeve for the 1973 album is undeniably amongst the most iconic and recognisable album covers of all time, and now a new poll of Music Radar readers has named the artwork as the best of all time.

Floyd's Animals album also featured in the top ten, with its iconic Battersea Power Station image.

The poll largely, and inevitably, saw classic albums dominate rather than modern records, with the newest album in the top ten being Rage Against The Machine's 1992 self-titled debut album.

Other albums in the Top 10 included King Crimon's debut, The Clash's London Calling, Maiden's Number Of The Beast and two Beatles albums (Sgt Pepper's and the White Album).

Will Groves, editor of MusicRadar.com, said: "The Dark Side Of The Moon is conclusive proof that one simple, enduring image is the winning formula when it comes to album artwork, particularly when it's harnessed to such an iconic musical work.

"Any of the top 10 would have been worthy winners but the Floyd cover is a welcome reminder of a time when sleeve art meant much more than a jpeg a couple of hundred pixels wide in your iTunes library."

Here's the top ten:
