PHOTOS: The Division Bell heads loaded into V&A museum for Pink Floyd exhibition
The sizable metal heads that adorn the cover of Pink Floyd’s 1994 album ‘The Division Bell’ have been loaded into London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.
Each roughly the height of a double-decker bus, a team of over 20 people were involved in the back-breaking work of moving the vast sculptures off a lorry and into the museum ahead of The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains kicking off on Saturday 13th May.
Devised by artist Keith Breeden and constructed by John Robertson, back in early 1994 legendary longtime Pink Floyd artist Storm Thorgerson positioned the heads in a cold wintry field near Ely, Cambridgeshire to create the iconic album cover shoot.
Somewhat aptly, the heads arrived at the V&A Museum yesterday (28th March), which was the 23rd anniversary of the release of 'The Division Bell'.
The Division Bell heads are the first of over 350 objects and artefacts arriving at the V&A for the Pink Floyd retrospective.
Running from Saturday 13th May to Sunday 1st October 2017, the exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of the band’s seminal debut album ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’ and inaugural single ‘Arnold Layne’.
Described as an ‘immersive, multi-sensory and theatrical journey’ through multiple aspects of the band’s career, the exhibition will chronicle the music, iconic visuals and staging of the band.
Surviving Pink Floyd members Nick Mason, Roger Waters and David Gilmour have all been involved in the project, which is being promoted by Michael Cohl and Iconic Entertainment Studios.
Alongside The Division Bell, there will also be set and construction pieces from other seminal Pink Floyd album covers including The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall.
Among the smorgasbord of items on display are instruments, music technology, original designs, architectural drawings, handwritten lyrics and psychedelic prints and posters, and the sonic experience will be helmed by Sennheiser.
A school cane used to hit Roger Waters, Storm Thorgerson and Syd Barrett as kids at Cambridge High School for Boys will also be on display.
Other attractions include never-seen-before Pink Floyd gig footage and a custom-designed laser light show.
