Phil Manzanera Reissues Solo Project Records
Diamond Head and Quiet Sun\'s Mainstream are reissued in January
Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera is to reissue two solo side project albums on 31 January.
Quiet Sun’s Mainstream and solo album Diamond Head are both reissued as collector’s editions through Phil’s label, Expression Records in January. Both albums are remastered and contain bonus tracks and new liner notes.
Quiet Sun was a four piece conceived in 1970 at Manzanera’s alma mater, Dulwich College. His fellow band members were Bill MacCormick, bass, Charles Hayward, drums, vocals and Dave Jarrett, keyboards: after a brief tour and no record deal in prospect, the band split and Manzanera joined Roxy Music. By 1974, riding high on the Roxy wave, Manzanera secured a deal for his debut album Diamond Head. What he didn’t mention was that he had reformed Quiet Sun and was splitting his daily 12 hour studio time between the two projects. Manzanera said:
"I think of Mainstream and Diamond Head as fraternal twins, recorded at the same time, gestated in the same studio and over 12 hour sessions: 12pm – 6pm was the Diamond Head sessions, and 6pm – 12am was for Mainstream, with Eno joining in. Management and Island Records were rather nonplussed to be handed two albums – both were released in 1975 and formed much of the set list for the 801 Live shows.”
