Former Motörhead axeman Phil Campbell has revealed the one piece of advice he’d give to aspiring rockers hoping to make it in the music industry.
In an exclusive video clip recorded for Planet Rock ahead of the release of his debut solo album ‘Old Lions Still Roar’ later this month, Phil Campbell said he’d advise any up-and-coming musicians to “play something you enjoy” that's from your “heart and soul.”
Campbell explained: “The advice I would give is play something you enjoy. Don’t expect to be a success necessarily – play music that your heart and soul is into and you enjoy it. With a bit of luck then you might get some success.”
He continued: “It would be terrible going around playing crappy gigs with music you hate. What’s the point of that?!
“Try and be as creative as you can. People like (David) Bowie and that, they never followed anyone. Music is great because it’s got no boundaries, it’s got no rules. It’s like a blank page – you’ve got to keep trying and keep having fun trying.”
Campbell added: “If you don’t want to create music anymore just stop. Don’t complain about it - although I do complain for the sake of complaining like. Music is still quite young in the scale of things so there are no limits or boundaries so use it as you want really.”

Campbell says of the record: "I'm really happy to release my first solo album, ‘Old Lions Still Roar’, worldwide. I'm also honoured to have mega talented guests and friends do their thing. Looking forward to everyone taking a listen!"
Motörhead were named among the 16 nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yesterday, however Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee were missed off the ballot.
Reacting to the omission, Mikkey Dee told Billboard: "That is pure wrong, I would say, and I know Phil (Campbell) will be very disappointed, too."
He continued: "We've been carrying the flag for 25 years together, and actually brought Motörhead to what it was. We did 25 years out of the 40. The original band lasted just a few years.
“They started it off, but as Lemmy said himself they wouldn't have lasted another six months doing that line-up. I don't think we would've been where we are today without the 25 years we spent touring."
