Ones To Watch: These Wicked Rivers
Planet Rock’s seventh Ones To Watch feature sees us shine the spotlight on effervescent Derby rockers These Wicked Rivers.
These Wicked Rivers are John Hartwell (vocals/rhythm guitar), Arran Day (lead guitar), Jon Hallam (bass), Dan Southall (drums).
Hoping to become Derby’s hottest export since Lara Croft, These Wicked Rivers are purveyors of muscular, riff-heavy rock n’ roll that nods towards everyone from Black Stone Cherry to Clutch and Soundgarden yet somehow manages to sound original and vital. Musically, they’re a well-oiled rock beast and in John Hartwell they have a frontman with a truly timeless, gratifyingly gravelly rock voice.
The quartet formed in February 2014 and since making their live debut exactly three years ago, they’ve steadily been picking up plaudits for their gutsy live performances. They unleashed their boldly titled debut EP ‘The Enemy’ in July 2015 that showcased their embryonic promise and truly came into their own with the seven-track follow-up EP ‘II’, which was released in April and has spawned the meaty singles ‘When The War Is Won’ and ‘Testify’.
Alongside releasing the EP, 2017 has seen These Wicked Rivers’ career gain momentum thanks to a tour with blues rockers Tax The Heat and slots at 2Q Festival and Osfest in their native Derby. Ending the year on a zenith, the band have five upcoming shows including a coveted Stage 2 slot at Planet Rockstock on Saturday 2nd December. We implore you to check them out if you can!
