Ones To Watch: Hightown Parade

In the 39th instalment of our weekly Ones To Watch feature, we’re shining the spotlight on the Brighton-based quartet Hightown Parade.

Hightown Parade are Chris Payn (vocals, guitar, piano), Io Kaloudi (bass), Galen Stapley (guitar), Chris Sampson (guitar, piano).

One of music’s great powers is its propensity to provide escapism. Sometimes songs can transport you into other realms and make you instantly forget about any niggling worries and the turbulent outside world. In its three minutes and 46 seconds of strutting and glam-tinged rock n’ roll brilliance, Hightown Parade’s ‘Silhouette’ does exactly that. Embracing the theme of self-belief outweighing and counteracting self-hate, the Planet Rock playlisted track is imbued with positivity, chock-a-block with catchy hooks and armed with a chant-along chorus that gets into your cranium and stays there for days.

Fortunately, ‘Silhouette’ is no flash in the pan. Last November, the Brightonians released the short and very sweet track ‘Choose’ that opens with captivating frontman Chris Payn bouncing his exuberant vocals off a simple keyboard hook and occasional stabs of guitars before just past the minute mark it transcends into powerful and fist-clenching anthem. It’s flamboyant and theatrical rock music that oozes panache.

Looking forward, Hightown Parade are currently hard at work on their debut studio album that they’re hoping to release before the end of 2018 – if they can maintain the lofty standards of ‘Choose’ and ‘Silhouette’ then we’re in for an absolute treat. The band were also recently confirmed as very special guests on all nine dates of Dan Patlansky’s Planet Rock presents November 2018 tour. Tickets are on sale from Planet Rock Tickets right now, check them if you can!
