Nuno Bettencourt says Eagles' 'Hotel California' has the greatest guitar solo of all time

Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt has waxed lyrical about Eagles’ seminal 1977 anthem ‘Hotel California’ saying it features the greatest guitar solo of all time.
To celebrate the recent release of Extreme’s sixth studio album ‘Six’, guitar virtuoso Nuno Bettencourt is our very special guest on our Sunday 9th July episode of My Planet Rocks.
As with all episodes of My Planet Rocks, Nuno cherry-picks some of his favourite rock songs of all time, including Eagles’ ‘Hotel California.’
Nuno explained to Liz Barnes that what makes ‘Hotel California’ so “iconic” is the two minutes and 12 seconds guitar solo at the end of the song performed by Don Felder and Joe Walsh.
“As a song ‘Hotel California’ is probably the most iconic song (in Eagles’ back catalogue) so it's kind of obvious,” Nuno said. “People are gonna go ‘Nuno, are you gonna choose an Eagles song, and you're gonna go the most obvious one?!’ Yes! But not because of the song.
“The song is a great song. It's an anthem. Everybody sings every lyric, but what's really special about this song is the end of the song - the guitar solo. The guitar solo to me, it's right there (raises hands)… I'm gonna go with the greatest guitar solo of all time.”
Enthusiastically lavishing ‘Hotel California’ with praise, Nuno continued: “You can sit there and sing every note of this solo like you're singing a song. It’s the most memorable, iconic… the harmonies, the conversation of it with both guitar players going back and forth is iconic. It's tasty. The tone of it, the sound of it, it's the perfect guitar solo. There's nothing wrong with it.
“People will say it's too long. (No) that's why it's so iconic! For a guitar player to play that long, or to have a solo that long, and keep you engaged and have you remember all of it like a lyric in a song. It's nearly impossible to have that accolade.
“To say that ‘I wrote one of the longest solos of all time, one of the greatest, most tastiest, most nuanced, flavourful solo.’ And we can all… a person in the street can sing the solo and hum it to you like it was a lyric. That is iconic to me.”
