News Roundup 2011: May
Members of one legendary band reunite onstage, while another legendary band lose their guitarist to rehab
Pink Floyd's three surviving members defied the odds to reunite onstage during Roger Waters' performance of The Wall in London on 12 May. David Gilmour joined Waters for a sensational performance of 'Comfortably Numb' before Nick Mason also joined in on the set closer 'Outside The Wall.' There were no more reunions on the tour, but The Wall was easily one of the most spectacular tours that has ever been staged.
Meanwhile Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora checked himself into rehab for "exhaustion" and to "regain his sobriety". The band quickly found a temporary replacement in Triumph's Phil X, who filled in until the start of their European tour in June.
Pete Townshend announced that he had started work on his long awaited memoirs. The book will apparently be titled Who He? and it is expected to be published in the next couple of years.
Jonathan Demme recorded the final part of his Neil Young trilogy. The film is called Neil Young Journeys and the movie will be an intimate portrait of Young's Massey Hall gigs from his Le Noise tour. It also features footage of Young in his car, visiting places from his life. The film is still yet to be given a release date but it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September.
And Scott Weiland painted himself as the villain once more with the revelation that he joined Velvet Revolver solely for the money. His autobiography, Not Dead And Not For Sale: A Memoir, had this passage in it: "They put some songs on a CD and my wife said, 'They think you'll like what they're doing.' I didn't - it sounded like Bad Company and I never liked Bad Company. A week or so later another CD arrived with songs custom-designed for me. I wasn't sure whether I wanted to hook up with these guys. Duff said, 'There's soundtrack stuff we've been asked to do, and the money's great.' The money attracted me. I can't call it the music of my soul. There was a certain commercial calculation behind it."
