Neil Young has filed for divorce from his wife of 36 years, Pegi Young - reports Rolling Stone.

The US publication has obtained papers that show Young filed a petition for dissolution of marriage in their hometown of San Mateo, California on Tuesday 29th July.

Pegi received a copy of the notice on 31st July and both have individually submitted a notice of alternative dispute resolution.

A further divorce hearing is scheduled for 12th December. The couple and their representatives have not commented on the proceedings.

Neil Young and Pegi met in 1972 when she was working as a waitress at a restaurant near his California home.

They tied the knot in 1978 and went on to have two children together, Amber and Ben.

Pegi is the inspiration for some of Young’s most poignant love songs including ‘Unknown Legend’ and ‘Once an Angel’ and from the early 1990s onwards served as his backing vocalist.

They were both scheduled to perform at Farm Aid on 13th September in Raleigh, North Carolina, however Pegi’s name has since been removed from the line-up.

Their last live show together was at the Bridge School Benefit in October 2013.

Neil and Pegi co-founded the Bridge School in 1986, which raises money to educate children with physical impairments, after they grew frustrated with the lack of opportunities for their son Ben who has cerebral palsy.
