Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee are in the studio with Bob Rock
Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee have joined forces in the studio for the first time since Mötley Crüe’s demise in 2015.
An image posted on Mötley Crüe’s official Facebook page last night alongside the caption ‘28th August 2018’ depicts the bassist and drummer in the recording studio with eminent producer Bob Rock. Mick Mars and Vince Neil are both absent in the picture.
Bob Rock produced two Mötley Crüe albums during their 34-year career - 1989’s ‘Dr. Feelgood’ and 1994’s self-titled ‘Mötley Crüe’.
Tommy Lee also shared the same image on Instagram along with the caption ‘It’s the new sh**!’ He previously shared a video of himself playing drums in the studio earlier this week.
It’s currently unclear why Tommy and Nikki are making music together in the studio – and indeed whether Mick and Vince are involved - however fans have speculated whether it’s for the upcoming Netflix movie The Dirt based on the infamous Mötley Crüe 2001 biography of the same name.
Directed by Jeff Tremaine from a screenplay by Rich Wilkes, The Dirt stars Douglas Booth as Nikki Sixx, Machine Gun Kelly (real name Richard Colson Baker) as Tommy Lee, Daniel Webber as Vince Neil and Iwan Rheon as Mick Mars.
Principal production started on the biopic in February 2018 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Vince Neil said of the project in 2016: “I don't wanna really be involved in something that's just piece-mealed together just to say, 'We did it!' You know, one of those VH1 rock movies you see like on Meat Loaf. It's not what we wanted.
"We think that the story's actually more important than, actually, the band. It's a really interesting story. It's not really just about girls pulling their pants down in the bathroom and us snorting blow off their asses – there's a bigger story to it.”
After 34 years and more than 100 million record sales, Mötley Crüe called it a day on 31st December 2015 with a show at The Staples Centre in their native Los Angeles.
