Watch Metallica tear through a euphoric 'Whiskey in the Jar' at Download Festival

Metallica have shared official footage of their performance of ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ at Download Festival on Saturday 10th June.

James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Robert Trujillo and Kirk Hammett’s phenomenal show at Download Festival on the Saturday was the second of two headline sets at Castle Donington as part of their M72 World Tour.

Each location on the global trek features two Metallica performances over two nights with completely different setlists.

Metallica launched into ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ towards the end of their second show, shortly before set closers ‘One’ and ‘Enter Sandman.’

The traditional Irish song has been performed by a vast array of artists, however it was popularised by Thin Lizzy in 1972. Metallica recorded a metal incarnation of Thin Lizzy’s version for their ‘Garage Inc.’ compilation album in 1998 and they often perform it live.

Following their rousing rendition at Download Festival, James Hetfield told the 100,000-strong Download crowd: “That was for my hero Mr Phil Lynott. We miss you brother.”
