The heavy metal icons covered four Ronnie James Dio-era Rainbow tracks (‘A Light In The Black’, ‘Tarot Woman’, ‘Stargazer’ and ‘Kill the King’) as part of their ‘Ronnie Rising Medley’ on the 2014 charity tribute album ‘Ronnie James Dio – This Is Your Life’. It later also appeared on the deluxe edition of ‘Hardwired… to Self-Destruct’.

Metallica, of course, have covered a plethora of songs throughout their career including Budgie’s ‘Breadfan’, Queen’s ‘Stone Cold Crazy’, Diamond Head’s ‘Am I Evil?’ and the Thin Lizzy version of the traditional Irish song ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ to name but a few.

In a fan Q&A in the latest issue of Kerrang! Magazine, Metallica were asked what is their favourite cover song to play live.

Guitarist Kirk Hammett replied: “Well (Misfits’) ‘Last Caress’ is just one of those songs, man. It’s just so quick and to the point. I love a lot of the covers we do.

“One thing that I would like to do live one of these days is the Dio/Rainbow medley (Ronnie Rising Medley). I think that’d be f***ing incredible to do that live sometime because I’m a big Dio fan, I’m a big Rainbow fan.”

Asked by another fan how they pick a setlists, drummer Lars Ulrich said: “What’s really important is every time Metallica come to your city, you get a different experience than it was the last time and it will be the next time.

“Everybody is game for mixing it up always and it also keeps us on our toes. We haven’t played the same setlist for about 15 years now.”
