Metallica’s performance of ‘Enter Sandman’ at Virginia Tech’s Lane Stadium on Wednesday night (7th May) received such a huge response from the 65,000-strong crowd it triggered seismic activity.

Since 2000, the Virginia Tech Hokies American football team have entered the field at Lane Stadium to the thunderous sounds of Metallica’s 1991 anthem ‘Enter Sandman’.

As with all five previous dates on the 2025 leg of Metallica’s M72 World Tour, the metal titans saved ‘Enter Sandman’ as the final song on the night.

With James Hetfield shouting “I think we’re missing something…. let’s go, Hokies!”, the storming rendition of ‘Enter Sandman was duly met with a euphoric reaction from the bouncing, sold-out audience.

In fact, such was the earthshaking moment, it actually registered on the Richter Scale thanks to staff at The Virginia Tech Seismological Observatory (VTSO) recording it from a mile away.

You can see video footage right here:

VTSO Director Martin Chapman said: "While being dubbed the ‘Metallica Quake’ online, it actually posed no danger, and – being less than 1.0 on the Richter scale – was not assigned an official rating."

Before the concert on Wednesday, Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry presented Metallica with No. 25 and No. 72 jerseys.
