Metallica donate over £200,000 to Turkey-Syria earthquake relief effort
It's used being used for medical supplies and meals
Metallica have pledged $250,000 (around £207,000) to the humanitarian relief effort following the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
More than 41,000 people are known to have been killed in Turkey and Syria since the catastrophic 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey in the early hours of Monday 6th February, and that figure continues to rise.
Metallica have announced today (15th February) that they have pledged $125,000 each to Direct Relief and World Central Kitchen, who are both providing humanitarian relief and aid on the ground in Turkey and Syria.
Direct Relief are delivering urgent medical equipment to those injured from the earthquake, while World Central Kitchen is providing over 125,000 meals per day in the region.
The donations have come from Metallica’s non-profit organisation, the All Within My Hands Foundation, which the legendary metal band founded in 2017 with the aim of supporting the fight against hunger, workforce education, and other critical services.
Metallica said in a statement: “We’re at a loss for words to describe the devastation in southern Turkey and northern Syria. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake has reduced the entire region to rubble. The death toll continues to rise.
“Two of our All Within My Hands Foundation's partner organizations, Direct Relief and World Central Kitchen, have boots on the ground providing medical aid and food to the victims of this disaster. #AWMH is providing $125k grants to each organization to support their relief efforts.”
Metallica previously donated £40,000 to a Manchester based homeless charity before their Etihad Stadium show in 2019, and £24,000 to two London charities – City Harvest London and Magic Breakfast – ahead of their Twickenham Stadium gig.
The ever-charitable Metallica always donate to local aid agencies on pit stops on their tour dates and back in June 2018 they gave their entire £85,000 Polar Music Prize money to three separate Swedish charities.
When wildfires were ravaging California in November 2018, Metallica donated $100,000 to wildfire relief efforts through their All Within My Hands Foundation.
Each December, Metallica hold their annual Helping Hands Concert in California with proceeds going to All Within My Hands.
