The band performed in the lashing rain
Metallica’s first full concert of 2024 was hit by a biblical thunderstorm over the weekend.
As part of their multi-year M72 World Tour, Metallica played two gigs at Munich Olympiastadion on Friday and Sunday night (24th and 26th May) with each concert featuring a completely different setlist.
Midway through the set on Friday, heavy rain started to batter the Olympiastadion and it gradually built in intensity as Metallica reached the climax of the concert.
As the San Francisco metal titans launched into set closer ‘Master of Puppets’, a thunderstorm erupted overhead with the Metallica crowd cheering every time a lightning bolt lit up the sky.
Undeterred by the torrential weather, a completely soaked James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo ploughed on with the performance amid an electric atmosphere.

Of course, it’s not the first time Metallica have performed ‘Master of Puppets’ in the lashing rain.
The band’s Manchester Etihad Stadium gig in June 2019 was also hit by torrential rain, and Metallica later shared professionally shot footage of ‘Master of Puppets’:
Metallica’s second gig in Munich on Sunday featured the live debut of their longest song ever, ‘Inamorata.’
