Metallica will release their new studio album ’72 Seasons’ on Friday 14th April 2023 via their Blackened Recordings imprint.

The heavy metal legends’ first studio album since 2016’s ‘Hardwired…To Self-Destruct’ features 12 songs and clocks in at over 77 minutes.

Produced by Greg Fidelman with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, ’72 Seasons’ is available in a variety of formats including 2LP 140g black vinyl and limited-edition variants, CD and digital.

As a tantalising taster for the record, Metallica have unleashed the fiery, frenetic, three-and-a-half-minute lead single ‘Lux Æterna' and its accompanying video directed by Tim Saccenti.

Watch Metallica’s 'Lux Æterna' video:

Commenting on the concept for ’72 Seasons’, James Hetfield says: “72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told ‘who we are’ by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are.

“I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is re-enactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry.”
