LISTEN: Heavy metal cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ dents US chart
A heavy metal reinterpretation of Pink Floyd’s seminal classic ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ is making waves Stateside.
To celebrate 50 years of Pink Floyd releasing music, guitarist Kyle Shutt from Texan band The Sword decided to produce a heavy metal reworking of Pink Floyd’s masterpiece, entitled ‘The Doom Side of the Moon’.
Alongside Shutt, the album features his The Sword bandmates, bassist Bryan Richie and drummer Santiago Vela III, together with singer Alex Marrero (Brownout / Brown Sabbath), saxophonist Jason Frey (Black Joe Lewis / Hard Proof), and keyboardist Joe Cornetti (Croy & The Boys).
‘The Doom Side of the Moon’ was released in the US on Friday 4th August – the eve of the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s debut ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’ – and entered the Billboard Top 200 at #81.

Shutt told Bravewords: "I'm almost speechless. The amount of love that we've received since announcing this project is blinding, we can't thank everyone enough who had a hand in our album cracking the Top 200!
“I still can't believe our Pink Floyd laser band with no label and no distributors can put up numbers like that. Thank you again everyone, it could not have been possible without the vision of Pink Floyd and your trust in our interpreting it."
Unveiling the project back in June, Shutt said: “The idea came to me after getting baked and wanting to hear a heavy version of ‘Time'.
“I thought, why not just cover the whole album? After sitting down and working out some loose concepts, the arrangement for ‘Money’ materialized, and I realized that I could totally do this if I assembled the right band.
“It felt a little strange messing with someone’s legacy, but I’m treating it as a celebration of one of the greatest bands to ever rock, a party that everyone is invited to.”
