First look: See photos of the Lemmy statue ahead of its unveiling in Stoke
Andy Edwards has shared images of the statue in production
Acclaimed British sculptor and keen Motörhead aficionado, Andy Edwards, has given Planet Rock a sneak peek at his Lemmy statue during the production process.
Andy Edwards, who was born in Stoke-on-Trent just like his “personal hero” Ian Fraser ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister, has created a number of iconic statues throughout his distinguished career.
His previous statues include The Beatles on Liverpool’s Pier Head, The Bee Gees in Douglas, Brian Clough and Peter Taylor at Derby County’s Pride Park stadium, and Sir Alex Ferguson at Aberdeen’s Pittodrie Stadium.
Set to be located at Burslem’s Market Place, Edwards’ 2.25 metre bronze Lemmy statue will be officially unveiled at a special Lemmy Forever ceremony at 4pm on Friday 9th May 2025 on the very year Motörhead celebrate their 50th anniversary.
The statue depicts Lemmy throwing an iconic pose on stage with Motörhead during their all-conquering prime in the 1980s, and it will stand on a 3-metre-high sandstone plinth.
Exactly six weeks before the finished statue is revealed to the public, Andy Edwards has shared photos with Planet Rock of the statue being made in the studio.
As the images of the incredibly Lemmy-like statue show, Edwards has contemplated every intricate detail from the rings on Lemmy’s fingers through to his famous Rickenbacker 4001 guitar.
The first three photographs show the statue as it was being sculpted in Staffordshire clay, while the final two are of the hollow wax sections of the statue being readied for the ceramic shell stage of the bronze casting process.
Andy Edwards told Planet Rock: "I’m looking forward to the unveiling on May 9th in Market Square, Burslem, there's a lot happening quickly now.
“The statue, which has been cast in several bronze sections, is being fabricated together by our devoted foundry team in North Wales, one of the places Lemmy grew up, of course, during his pre-teens and teens.”
He continued: “There's a real buzz in the workshops. Lemmy was very much a man of the people, and he is a genuine working-class hero. All the moulders, casters, welders and engineer fabricators working with me on the statue love that, and the ones that weren't big fans before absolutely are now – it’s like a shrine to him in the workshop right now.
“We're very conscious that this monument is going to be a shrine of sorts so amongst the excitement is a sense of deep reverence too. I just hope people feel we've done him justice."
