Jon Bon Jovi quashes talk of Richie Sambora reuniting with Bon Jovi
He's only spoken to Sambora twice in 11 years
Jon Bon Jovi has shut down growing speculation about Richie Sambora rejoining Bon Jovi.
Shortly after he was unveiled as Jacket Potato on ITV show The Masked Singer in February 2023, Richie Sambora told Planet Rock he was “ready” to join forces with Bon Jovi a decade on from his departure.
He also told Absolute Radio at the time: “I don't know when Jon’s going to get his voice together and (when the Bon Jovi reunion is) going to happen, but we have to get out there and do it for the fans really. I feel a second obligation.”
Since then, Sambora has expressed his wish to reunite with the band in multiple interviews, and last autumn he suggested Bon Jovi’s 40th anniversary would be a perfect opportunity.
Currently doing the promotional rounds in support of Bon Jovi’s new studio album ‘Forever’, eponymous frontman Jon Bon Jovi has said a reunion with Sambora isn’t likely to happen.
Reflecting on Sambora’s departure in 2013, Bon Jovi told Classic Rock magazine: “It was a shock. Nobody anticipated it, no one saw it coming. I talked to him the day before, I remember it so well. It was Easter Sunday, 2013, and I was driving through the Lincoln Tunnel as I was talking to him, because I was living in New York, and I was like: ‘Yeah, I’m feeling great, the album (2013’s What About Now) is gonna come in at Number One, see you up there.’
“He said: ‘Can I stay home one more day?’ ‘Of course. You want to fly private tomorrow? Sure. Do it. I don’t care. See you up there.’ And then the next day the phone rings at three in the afternoon, and, you know… ‘I can’t go on.’”
Bon Jovi went on to refute the idea suggested by Sambora that Bon Jovi was turning “stale”, saying: “I didn’t think so, and the collective, we didn’t think so.
“I personally thought that everything was going incredibly f---ing well. And it was never brought up in the room, or in the writing, or in the recording, or during the first 20 shows of that tour.”
Commenting on a possible reunion, Bon Jovi said: “I’ve talked to him twice (in 11 years). He. Quit. The. Band. I swear to Christ there was never a fight, nothing… He wasn’t kicked out, he quit. And he hasn’t made any great overtures about coming back.”
Bon Jovi’s 16th studio album ‘Forever’ is released on Friday 7th June 2024.
