John Lydon dismisses Generation Sex and compares Billy Idol to Cliff Richard
Unsurprisingly he's not a fan
In news that will shock absolutely no one, John Lydon has voiced his disapproval of the Sex Pistols / Generation X hybrid group Generation Sex.
Featuring Billy Idol (vocals) and Tony James (bass) from Generation X alongside Sex Pistols alumni Steve Jones (guitars) and Paul Cook (drums), Generation Sex made their UK live debut at Glastonbury in June.
Following this, they played London’s Dog Day Afternoon festival in July and headline shows in Wolverhampton and Manchester alongside other dates in Europe.
The setlist featured a mix of Sex Pistols and Generation X originals, plus two tracks the Pistols famously covered, ‘My Way’ and ‘(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone.’
In a recent interview to promote Public Image Ltd’s new album ‘End of the World’, John Lydon was asked about his thoughts on Generation Sex and unsurprisingly he isn’t a fan.
“Good luck to them but come on boys, get it together,” Lydon said.
“The Pistols side of it is songs they never really understood and Billy’s got to come in as a translator.
“What has poor Billy taken on? We used to call him the Cliff Richard of punk and he was such a nice fella and easy to get on with.
“Him and Sid (Vicious) used to be quite ludicrous about who could do the best Elvis Presley sneer.”
Elsewhere in the chat, Lydon rubbished the idea that punk music emerged from New York, saying it was a quintessentially British movement.
“I’ve heard an awful lot of American journalists pretending that the whole punk influence came out of New York,” Lydon noted to The Sun.
“Well, hello? Bands like Sweet with Ballroom Blitz and Mud with Tiger Feet — that’s the do that, man!
“T. Rex, David Bowie, Slade, Mott The Hoople, The Alex Harvey Band — their influence was enormous.
“And they try to write that all off and wrap it around Patti Smith. It’s so wrong!”
