John Lennon Tooth Sells For £20k
Grim lot sells for nearly double the expected amount in Stockport
The molar was given by Lennon to his house keeper Dot Jarlett, who worked for him in the 1960s, and it eventually ended up in the hands of Alan McGee - the former label boss of Creation Records (home to Primal Scream & Oasis amongst others) - who was selling the gruesome item as part of a huge sale of all his rock memorabilia.
Lennon's tooth sold for £19,500 to Michael Zuk, a dentist in Alberta, Canada who has written a book on celebrity teeth and intends to display the former Beatle's tooth at his practice or take it on tour to dental schools.
"Once I heard it was up for sale I had to have it," Zuk tells the BBC. "Some people will think its gross, others will be fascinated by it."
Karen Fairweather from Omega Auctions, said of Lennon's tooth: "It's rather gruesome, yellowy, browny with a cavity.
"John Lennon came back from the dentist and gave it to his housekeeper and said to dispose of it 'or better still give it to your daughter as a souvenir'."
