Jimi Hendrix's fabled Band of Gypsys Fillmore East concerts compiled for box set

Alongside bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles, Hendrix performed four shows at the now defunct Fillmore East over two days on New Year’s Eve 1969 and New Year’s Day 1970.

Select tracks from the third and fourth gig appeared on the March 1970 live album ‘Band of Gypsys’, while select performances from across the four concerts appeared on the 1999 posthumous live album ‘Live at the Fillmore East’.

Additionally, just three years ago the first concert was released in full as ‘Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69’.

Now, NY-Experience Hendrix L.L.C. and Legacy Recordings have announced that all four historic debut concerts will be released as an expansive box set called ‘Songs For Groovy Children: The Fillmore East Concerts’.

Assembling the shows in their original performance sequence, ‘Songs For Groovy Children’ is released digitally and as a 5CD box set on Friday 22nd November, with an 8-vinyl version following on Friday 13th December.

Newly mixed by legendary studio wizard Eddie Kramer, the box set boasts over two dozen tracks that have either never before been released commercially or have been newly pressed and newly remixed.

Kramer was also on production duties for the release alongside Janie Hendrix and John McDermott - the trio that has overseen every project for Experience Hendrix since 1995. Grammy-winning engineer Bernie Grundman mastered the collection.

Alongside the veritable smorgasbord of live music, ‘Songs For Groovy Children: The Fillmore East Concerts’ features unseen photos from Fillmore East house photographer Amalie Rothschild, Jan Blom (whose iconic, color saturated images provided the original artwork for 1970’s Band of Gypsys) and Marshall Amplifier representative Marc Franklin, who had full access to the group in their dressing room backstage.

The booklet includes memories from bassist Billy Cox and liner notes by author, journalist and filmmaker Nelson George.
