James Hetfield issues statement as Metallica pull out of two festivals

Papa Het, who was admitted to rehab last autumn for addiction, explained that as part of his “continuing effort to get and stay healthy” he has two “critical recovery events” those weekends.

“The reality is that I have not prioritized my health in the past year of touring and I now know that my mental health comes first,” James explained.

“That might sound like a no-brainer for most of you but I didn’t want to let the Metallica team/family down and, I alone, completely compromised myself.”

Opening up about his treatment for the first time, James added: “My therapy is going well. It was absolutely necessary for me to look after my mental, physical, and spiritual health.”

James went on to stress that all of Metallica’s other 2020 tour dates are still going ahead, and the WorldWired Tour will resume in Santiago, Chile this April.

Looking to the future, James concluded his statement: “Beyond 2020, I am optimistic about the blessings I have been given and what the future brings.

“I appreciate all the great prayers and support from everyone since I went into rehab last September. Like the moth into the flame, being human in this career has its huge challenges and can be difficult. Your understanding helps the healing.”

Metallica then revealed that two replacements have been sourced for one of the festivals: "Thanks to Tool and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who have graciously offered to step in for us at Sonic Temple; Louder Than Life headliners will be announced at a later date."

James Hetfield appeared in public for the first time since rehab at the launch of his custom car exhibition in Los Angeles on 30th January.

Last week James Hetfield returned to live action when he performed 'Baby Hold On' at the ‘A Star-Studded Tribute to Eddie Money’ concert at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills.

Earlier this month, Metallica postponed their All Within My Hands Helping Hands Concert in San Francisco until the autumn.
