Together with broadcaster Adrian Chiles, Bruce will represent Queen Mary College, London and they will compete against Cardiff University alumni BBC World News presenter Laura Trevelyan and former cycling world champion Nicole Cooke.

The Christmas University Challenge shows start on Christmas Eve on BBC Two and Bruce will star in the sixth episode, which airs at 8.30pm on New Year’s Day. If he gets through, the semi-finals take place on Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th January 2018.

After gaining A-Levels in English, History and Economics, Bruce joined the Territorial Army for six months before joining Queen Mary College in 1977 to study History.

Eventually achieving a 2:2 grade, Bruce was heavily involved in the Entertainments Committee at University where he roadied for bands including The Jam and Hawkwind when they played at the university.

He also formed a band called Speed (named after their style of play and not the drug) before joining Shots following the first band’s demise. He agreed to join Samson two weeks before his final exams.

In July 2011, Queen Mary University honoured Bruce by making him an Honorary Doctor of Music.
