Hendrix Named Greatest Guitarist

A new Rolling Stone poll picks the 100 greatest guitarists of all time

Published 24th Nov 2011

Hendrix topped the magazine's latest poll to find the greatest guitarists of all time.

To put the list together the magazine asked a range of guitarists and journalists to name their favourites. Amongst the people asked to give their opinion were Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains), Eddie Van Halen, Ritchie Blackmore, Don Felder (The Eagles), Robby Krieger (The Doors), Alex Lifeson (Rush), Nils Lofgren (The E Street Band), Mick Mars (Mötley Crüe), Brian May, Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) and Joe Perry.

Here's the top ten:

  1. Jimi Hendrix
  1. Eric Clapton
  1. Jimmy Page
  1. Keith Richards
  1. Jeff Beck
  1. B.B. King
  1. Chuck Berry
  1. Eddie Van Halen
  1. Duane Allman
  1. Pete Townshend

You can see the full top 100 HERE and as you scroll through you'll notice some very odd omissions and misplacements.

Amongst the oddities are, no places in the list at all for Joe Satriani, Jeff Healey, Gary Moore, Michael Schenker or Robin Trower, while Rory Gallagher is down at 57 and people like John Lennon, Joni Mitchell and Willie Nelson make the cut.
