Grohl goes to Sundance

Is there anything Dave Grohl can’t do?

Dave Grohl will make his directorial movie debut at the Sundance Film Festival in America next year.

His new documentary, "Sound City", will premiere at the event in January. It tells the story of the Californian recording studio of the same name which played host to classic sessions from Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, Tom Petty Metallica and many more.

Grohl got the idea for the film after buying an original sound desk from the studio, intended for his own home set-up. Producer Butch Vig is working on the soundtrack and told The Pulse of Radio, "when Dave got the board and put it in his studio, he had the idea to interview people who had recorded there. And he got a roster list of all the bands that had recorded there over 20 years — it's huge”.

Dave Grohl has released a statement about the movie, saying: "as a first-time director, I am humbled to be able to share my passion for songwriting and storytelling with this incredible cast of legendary musicians, as seen through the extraordinary story of America's greatest unsung recording studio, Sound City. Being included in this group of artists is a true honour, and the Sundance Film Festival is the perfect place to premiere a film about craft, integrity, and passion for art. I am over the moon!”
