Green Day Go Back To Basics On New Album

US rockers working on 21st Century Breakdown follow-up

US punk rockers Green Day have already begun work on a brand new studio album.

The band’s last album, 21st Century Breakdown, was released last May, but it looks likely that we won’t be waiting for five years (the gap between American Idiot and 21CB) for the next record.

Speaking to Kerrang!, frontman Billy Joe Armstrong told MTV that they were looking to the past for inspiration on the new album after two politically themed prog-punk concept albums.

"It's just been songwriting right now,” he said. "Instead of doing it later on, we decided to start doing stuff now. It's all back to the basics again. Just getting in a room together and start jamming.”

The band may road test some of the new material on their forthcoming European tour, which includes three UK shows.

16 June – Lancashire County Cricket Ground
19 June – Wembley Stadium
21 June – Glasgow SECC
