Black Sabbath bassist, lyricist, songwriter and co-founder Geezer Butler says he’s baffled whenever he’s labelled as a legend or a ‘hero.’

During a recent interview with Reader’s Digest to promote his autobiography ‘Into the Void: From Birth to Black Sabbath – and Beyond’, Geezer Butler was asked about his legendary status.

Ever humble, Geezer replied: “In the nineties and noughties, younger bass players in bands would come up and tell me I was their hero. It was odd, because I thought I was a pretty average guitarist.

“In the seventies and eighties, we thought everyone hated Black Sabbath. Now we had this reputation as the inventors of heavy metal!”

Elsewhere during the chat, Geezer reflected upon the first time he met Ozzy Osbourne in the late 1960s.

“I was in a band called Rare Breed. After getting sacked by Spartan Steel, I wanted to do music full time,” Geezer said.

“But the singer went off to perform on cruise ships, so I contacted someone who’d put a note in a guitar shop saying they wanted to join a band. He was called ‘Ozzy Zig’ and the next day, there was a knock on the door.

“Stood there was a skinhead with no shoes on, carrying a chimney brush over his shoulder and pulling a training shoe on a dog lead. He was obviously a complete nutter. I burst out laughing and said, ‘OK, you’re in.’

“Rare Breed broke up soon after, but Ozzy and I teamed up with drummer Bill Ward and guitarist Tony Iommi in 1968 to form Black Sabbath.”

In a separate interview with Rolling Stone last month, Geezer Butler confirmed his retirement, saying: “I don’t want to do anything anymore.”

He went on to explain that he’s listening to his body, saying: “Time starts tolling on your body physically and mentally and everything else.

“You can't go out and fool the public and pretend that you're really enjoying it when your back is killing you or something. It lets you know that it's time to call it a day."

Ozzy Osbourne cancelled his live comeback at Power Trip festival this week saying his body “was not ready yet.” Judas Priest have been drafted in as his replacement.
