Fragment of Jimi Hendrix’s smashed guitar goes on display
To mark what would have been Jimi Hendrix’s 75th birthday today (27th November), a fragment of the guitar he smashed at the Royal Albert Hall has gone on display.
The shard of the Fender Stratocaster guitar originates from The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s legendary show at the world-famous London concert hall on 24th February 1969.
Having played the Royal Albert Hall six days earlier, the second headline gig saw the band up the ante with an exhilarating live performance that culminated with Jimi ramming his guitar into the amplifier speakers, smashing the guitar and scattering pieces into the audience.
A sizable part of the shattered guitar body is on display at Jimi’s former flat turned museum at 23 Brook Street in Mayfair, London where he lived with his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham from 1968 to 1969.
The historic residence opened its doors to the public in February 2016 when Planet Rock’s Wyatt hosted a very special live show from the flat.
The guitar fragment is on loan to Handel & Hendrix in London from the Museum of Pop Culture in Jimi’s home city Seattle, Washington. It’s available to view from today until Friday 25th May 2018.
Tickets to Handel & Hendrix in London cost £10 and can be booked right here.
