Foo Fighters Rock Milton Keynes

The Foo Fighters played their second of two sold out shows at the Milton Keynes Bowl on Sunday night in front of a sell out crowd of 65,000 fans and Planet Rock was on hand to see it.

Unsurprisingly, the set leaned heavily on new album, Wasting Light, with the band opening the show with the first two tracks from the album ('Burning Bridges' and 'Rope') and playing a further five tracks (including a guest appearance from Husker Du's Bob Mould on 'Dear Rosemary') across the set.

Over the course of a 170 minute set the hits flowed freely, with the likes of 'Monkey Wrench', 'Breakout', 'Learn To Fly' and 'Best Of You' prompting mass singalongs around the sun-soaked, beer battered audience.

A stunning 'All My Life' concluded the first part of the show before Dave Grohl returned to play a solo rendition of 'Wheels' from a stage in the centre of the audience. A mostly solo 'Times Like These' was followed by a raucous elongated version of 'Young Man Blues' and then a guest appearance and jam with Sunday night's special guests, Seasick Steve and John Paul Jones, with Dave Grohl playing drums on the song 'Dog House Blues.'

A quick, and welcome run-through of first album "track 1, side 1"'This Is A Call' and then a grand finale of 'Everlong' (replete with fireworks) and the band's triumphant "stadium" headline return to the UK was complete.

Fundamentally this is the type of occasion that Dave Grohl relishes and one that he was born to play. For all of his protestations that he is surprised where his band have found themselves (i.e. the biggest rock act in the world today), he embodies the term "Rock Star" more accurately than any other human on the planet and if he WASN'T performing in front of massive crowds, playing some of the catchiest modern hard rock tunes of past 20 years it would be a damn shame.
