Fleetwood Mac announce 'Rumours Live' album with 90 minutes of unreleased music
Featuring tracks from 'Rumours' and 'Fleetwood Mac'
Fleetwood Mac will release the double album ‘Rumours Live’ on Friday 8th September featuring almost 90 minutes of unreleased live music.
The 2-CD and 2-LP album immortalises Fleetwood Mac’s concert at The Forum in Los Angeles on 29th August 1977 – the first show of a three-date residency at the iconic venue six months after the release of their blockbuster album ‘Rumours.’
Fleetwood 18-song set was dominated by songs from ‘Rumours’ and 1975’s ‘Fleetwood Mac’, with the Peter Green era of the band represented by just one track, ‘Oh Well.’
The concert audio remained unreleased for 44 years until ‘Gold Dust Woman’ from the show was included as a bonus track on ‘Live: Deluxe Edition’, Rhino’s 2021 expanded version of Fleetwood Mac’s 1980 concert album.
The remaining 17 songs on the ‘Rumours Live’ have never been heard outside of 17,500 people who attended the original concert.
Engineer Ken Caillat, who helped record ‘Rumours’, also recorded the concert at The Forum using the Record Plant’s mobile recording truck.
In the liner notes from ‘Rumours Live’, Fleetwood Mac author Sam Graham observes how different the recording is to the original ‘Rumours album.
“The songs are familiar: ‘Dreams,’ ‘Go Your Own Way,’ ‘Say You Love Me,’ ‘Over My Head,’ and on and on,” he writes.
“But most of these live versions are more muscular, more ferocious, than the album recordings, driven by the powerhouse Fleetwood-John McVie rhythm section and Buckingham’s febrile guitar playing; and instead of a rote recital of the hits, the group stretches out in concert, as songs like ‘Rhiannon,’ ‘World Turning,’ and ‘I’m So Afraid’ blossom into exuberant tours de force onstage.”
Mick Fleetwood marked what would have been Christine McVie’s 80th birthday last Wednesday (12th July) by sharing a beautiful new instrumental version of her signature song ‘Songbird.’
The fresh interpretation of the Christine McVie penned Fleetwood Mac ‘Rumours’ classic from 1977 sees Mick Fleetwood join musical forces with esteemed Hawaiian ukulele virtuoso and composer Jake Shimabukuro.
Later this year, McVie’s work as a solo artist will get its due when Rhino reissues two of her albums on Friday 3rd November.
‘Christine McVie’ will be released on CD and LP and as a cola-bottle clear vinyl version available exclusively from Barnes & Noble. On the same day, ‘In the Meantime’ will be released on CD and as a 2-LP set featuring a “songbird” etching on the final side.
Christine McVie died on 30th November 2022 aged 79 following a short illness.
Mick Fleetwood stated in February 2023 that Fleetwood Mac are 'done' following the death of McVie.
