Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, David Bowie help vinyl sales surge by 26.8% in 2017

A total of 4.1million vinyl records were purchased in 2017 as the format enjoyed a tenth consecutive year of growth.

As well as being up 26.8% year-on-year, the sales tally is up by 1,892% compared to 2007 when a measly 205,000 copies were sold.

Almost one in ten of all physical purchases are now on vinyl and sales are at their highest level since way back in 1991. Vinyl now accounts for 3% of music consumed in the UK.

Matt Ingham of independent label Cherry Red Records, said: “The music industry is in a permanent state of transformation. Genuine discovery is coming from the fresh resurgence in vinyl, the robust CD market and via the burgeoning streaming platforms.

“The combination of new and old technology means the industry can continue to rise to the challenge of providing the public with music to treasure forever.”

Although new releases – Ed Sheeran’s ‘÷’ and Liam Gallagher’s ‘As You Were’ - took the top two spots in the Official Chart Company’s biggest selling vinyl albums of 2017 countdown, albums by rock legends dominate the list.

Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours’ was the third best-selling LP of 2017 and the band’s ‘Greatest Hits’ album is at 33.

Pink Floyd are at seventh spot with their seminal masterpiece ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ and they also hit no.24 with ‘Wish You Were Here’.

Other rock acts on the list include David Bowie, Radiohead, Nirvana, Queen, Guns N’ Roses, Royal Blood, Foo Fighters, ELO and Queens of the Stone Age.
