Did "Embarrassing Incident" Lead To Boston Singer's Death?
Tom Scholz is suing a Boston newspaper over intimations that he was responsible for Brad Delp's suicide
Boston guitarist Tom Scholz is suing the Boston Herald over a report in which Scholz says the paper implied he drove the band’s lead singer, Brad Delp, to commit suicide in 2007.
The Boston Globe reports that due to the lawsuit some documents filed in the case reveal a pretty seedy side of the story which had hitherto been untold.
Following Delp’s death in 2007, the Herald, quoting an interview with Delp’s former wife, Micki Delp, and material from unnamed sources, seemed to suggest that Scholz was to blame for Delp’s suicide. A week after his 2007 suicide, the paper quoted Micki Delp in a piece with the headline, "Pal’s snub made Delp do it: Boston rocker’s ex-wife speaks." They wrote about the conflicts between Scholz and past band members and stated that Micki Delp said her former husband was "upset over the lingering bad feelings from the ugly breakup of the band Boston over 20 years ago’’ and "driven to despair" by recent changes in the group. It was, the Herald reported, "the last straw in a dysfunctional professional life that ultimately led to the frontman’s suicide, Delp’s ex-wife said."
However, the lawsuit which has been filed against the Herald has unearthed some stories which, according to Scholz, may help explain Delp's real reasons for taking his own life.
We won't go into the finer details of these new documents as they are really very grubby and very sad (if you really want to read about them then CLICK HERE), but they suggest that there had been an "extremely embarrassing" incident between Delp and his fiancée's sister plus other factors which may have contributed to Delp's state of mind at his time of death include the fact that his fiancée had an affair in the summer of 2006 plus he had long suffered from depression.
