Deep Purple delay the release of 'Whoosh!' due to coronavirus
It's being released later in the summer
Deep Purple have pushed back the release of their 21st studio album ‘Whoosh!’ two months because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The follow-up to 2017’s ‘Infinite’ was due to be released on Friday 12th June 2020 via earMUSIC, however singer Ian Gillan has confirmed today it will come out on an as-yet-unspecified date in August.
Gillan explained in a Facebook post that distribution lines for physical copies of ‘Whoosh!’ have been disrupted by coronavirus so they’ve been forced to push the album back.
Referring to coronavirus as The Dreaded Lurgi in reference to a Goon Show script from 1954, Ian Gillan wrote: “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction...well, not exactly in this case; more cause and effect, where the latter is often greater than the former.
“Distribution lines (the physical sales of CDs, vinyl, cassettes (?) etc) and retail outlets are closed until The Dreaded Lurgy* gets indigestion.
“Therefore, as there are still so many of us who love to hold a new record in our hands, and following advice from our magnificent label, we have decided to delay the release of Whoosh until August.
“During my quarantine I’m listening to a lot of music and guessing that it’s the same for many of us during this scary disruption to our lives.
“We know, don’t we, that music will play a big part in our celebrations as we step back into the light.
“But, health comes first, so I must stuff my excitement about sharing Whoosh with you back into a box for a little while.
“Stay well and follow the light…”
For the third consecutive album, Deep Purple have joined forces with esteemed producer Bob Ezrin (KISS, Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper) on ‘Whoosh!’, who personally invited the band to Nashville to write and record new songs.
According to earMUSIC, ‘Whoosh!’ is Deep Purple’s ‘most versatile’ and ‘boundary pushing’ collaboration with Bob Ezrin yet, and it’s the sound of ‘Deep Purple is putting the Deep back into Purple.’
Thematically it sees Deep Purple ‘voice their resentment about the current situation of the world and addressing all generations.’

Guitarist Steve Morse says: “We’ve included everything that made the whole band smile, including Bob Ezrin. We’ve always enjoyed making music and having the incredible luxury of a loyal audience.”
Bassist Roger Glover comments: “I‘ve been asked a lot: Is this our last album? I remember when we did ‘Now What?!’, which is now what…8 years ago? And then we did ‘InFinite’ and Don was asked is this the last album? He said: I thought the last album was the last album.”
